Black Tuesday?

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007, 12:12 pm

A few months back the powers that be here announced that we would be cutting back some on programs and therefore a few staff members would be cut as well. Quite a few of us wondered if we were one of the unlucky few.

Well, this morning they announced who would be leaving. One person who was terminated was no surprise, but the other 3 it is sad to see leave. I know they deliberated long and hard before choosing these particular positions, but it still hurts. Fortunately they’re being given a very generous severance package. It still sucks to be told 3 weeks before Xmas that you’re no longer employed.

This is a good place to work usually, but today is a very sad day.

And the worst thing is I’m breathing a sigh of relief that I wasn’t one of the ones to be let go.

I'm glad you weren't let go.

One of the worst things about the training job I had before I came to work for my current employer in 1998 was the near-constant firings and letting-people-go. The three-ring-binder for New Horizons Computer Learning Center franchisees said that you should treat your trainers like crap until they've been with you for 18 months and therefore proved their loyalty. Trainers got let go at the drop of a hat, from subpar evaluation scores (which is somewhat reasonable), to a single customer in a single class lying and saying that the trainer had insulted her, to completely invented reasons just to slash payroll. You never wanted to get too close to anyone you worked with because the odds were good that in a month they, or you, wouldn't be working there any more. How I lasted from December of 1995 to May of 1998 I'll never understand.

Your situation, fortunately, is much more humane, but still not exactly the sort of thing one wants to see happen, as you said, so close to Christmas.
