The Fall

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008, 12:39 pm

Steve and I saw a lovely movie Sunday, The Fall. It was filmed/released in 2006 but it's only just now making the artsy theaters in the U.S.

I really recommend this movie. The story is about a little girl with a broken arm in a hospital in California in the 1930s, and the stories a paraplegic stuntman tells her to get her to do things for her. I won't give away the magic of the story, only remind you that it is a movie with the flavor of 1930s movies.

It was beautiful and touching, and that little girl was FABULOUS!

Window vs. Bird

Friday, June 20th, 2008, 2:33 pm

A battle the bird always loses, often fatally. But today we were lucky. A woodpecker flew into one of our office windows, stunning himself. We put a mail crate over him to protect him from crows until he was able to fly away.

187!!!!

Thursday, June 19th, 2008, 12:17 pm

No, that's not how many miles I've walked in training so far. It's not my husband's weight either.

It's my cholestrol level. Last time I had it tested 3-4 years ago, it was over 250. I'm now at least 20 lbs. heavier and my level has gone down over 60 pts. WOOO!

It must be all this walking and shifting to mostly whole grains.

In Dancing News Today...

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008, 12:55 pm

Cyd Charisse died. Anyone who has ever watched "Singing in the Rain" or "Brigadoon" has fallen in love with her. She will be missed. She certainly inspired me!

In other news, ok, well not news, but the Pilobolus performance last night was great, as is to be expected. Probably my favorite pieces of the evening were " B'YZRK" and " MEGAWATT", the opening and closing pieces. For descriptions, click here:

As usual, the dancing was magnificent and funny. But funnier still were the rubes sitting behind us, who obviously had never been to a dance performance before. After B'YZRK, they got up for a stretch and were dismayed/surprised when the ushers wouldn't let them go back to their seats when the next performance started. Obviously they didn't hear the very clear request at the beginning to not leave their seats until intermission. When I pointed it out to the disgruntled man in the party, he said "I thought that WAS 3 pieces and this was intermission." I really didn't feel like explaining that the curtain goes down between each piece...

The Weather is Here...

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008, 2:40 pm

OK. Saturday morning I walked 9 miles or so in hot humid weather. The Race for the Cure a week earlier was even worse (but shorter).

Yesterday was in the high 80s and also humid. It rained in the afternoon and the ride home was awful--no traffic lights on most of my drive to work. It took my normal 20 minute commute to a whopping 1 hour and 20 minutes, making me very late to teach my 6 o'clock class and I had to send someone out to buy me dinner.

Today it is not humid, and the temps are in the high 70s. What a difference!

Guess what they say about weather in the DC area is true--Don't like it? Wait a bit. It'll change.
