Walkers are a bad thing -- or so says the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Dangerous and prone to accidents. And, yet, they are still manufactured and are hugely popular items. I will admit that I used one with my daughter. Granted, our apartment did not have stairs, so I felt safe using it. But, since we continue to use them, is it that we just feel we can't do without one? Busy moms and all that? Or, that we'll make sure that we monitor them enough that a tumble down the stairs would never happen?
So, as unsafe as walkers are today, I snapped a picture of this one at a local flea market. Pretty sure it wouldn't pass today's safety standards! But, it does show that even 100 years ago, moms still had the need to keep Junior safe while boiling the laundry over the hearth, rendering lard, tending the wood-burning stove or any of the other number of exhausting tasks turn-of-the-century women faced.
Makes our lives seem not so bad when you think about it. ;)
