One terabyte? Just how much is that?

Friday, June 27th, 2008, 11:29 am

I'm on the quest for an external hard drive and saw a one terabyte one.  I'm thinking this is WAAAAY cool -- but is it overkill?  Just how much do I need?  How much can you get on a one terabyte drive?

Enter SensibleUnits.com.  Using their super easy interface, I was able to see that on a one terabyte drive, I can store:

120 DVDs (dual layer).

20 Blu-ray Discs (dual layer).

33 HD DVDs (dual layer).

310 human genomes.

620 Windows XP installations.

120 Windows Vista installations.

370 English Wikipedias (without images).

It's not just for geek language, I can also see what one cup (US) can hold.  For those interested, it's:

28 grapes.

17 snail shells.

1.1 full wine glasses.

What a great idea!  For me, it's so much easier to "see" how much something holds if I can picture actual items in it.
