Description: Going Green...how to get started and make easy, every day Green changes.

Hip To Be Green

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008, 11:29 pm

It's hip to be green.  In fact, at times I almost feel like I'm back in grade school when I was teased for my freshly mom-permed hairdo (a disaster!) as I stood next to my best friend Teresa, who had a perfect coif and wore Jordache jeans with layered izods, usually pink and green, each day.  The peer pressure to conform to the consensus of other 13 year olds was brutal, but I certainly thought those days were behind me.  Not so.  Now the pressure to "go green" is on strong throughout suburbia, and the world for that matter.  And it's about time.

As a kid, my parents fed us organic beef and pork.  We lived in a rural town in Michigan and many of our neighbors were farmers.  The culture in the town was that of respect for all things living, both plant and animal.  My father, the son of an avid hunter and fisherman, would never think of harming an animal.  My mom was an avid gardener who had read up on composting and tried her hand at it successfully.  There were no Twinkies in our house, or Coke, or even Cookie Crisp (my brother is still bitter over this).  Instead, we feasted on fresh vegetables from the garden, raw nuts, natural peanut butter...not very hip when it came to trading treats at lunch time in school.  I had a hard time getting other kids to trade their Twinkies for my handful of raw almonds (I'm still bitter over this!).  And although my brother and I still pester and complain to my mom about our food selection, I am grateful for the efforts she made to teach us about creating health and well-being by making wise choices.

So go figure that it is now, when I'm in my 30s and not so prone to follow the herd, that "going green" is not just acceptable, but celebrated.  Everyone is doing it and talking about it.....politicians, actresses, sports figures, business men and women, and even friends and neighbors.  It is now hip to "go green".  There are entire TV shows and websites devoted to it!  The eyebrows furrow around the room during playdates if a mom serves anything but 100% natural juice boxes.  The pressure to make responsible choices for our health and the health of the planet is greater now than ever in history!

The greatest benefit to the pressure of going green is obviously the impact it can have on our planet and our children, but the residual outcome is the vast amount of products and services that are now available to fulfil the demand of the public at large!  While we must still be diligent about educating ourselves on products and services, this has made life a lot easier (and in some cases cheaper) than before it was "cool" to go green.

Our family is proud to offer natural lawn care services.  Knowing that our natural lawn care customers can take their children and pets into their backyard, without fear of harm, and spend quality family time together is rewarding.  Cool or not, choosing natural products and services just makes sense.  Let's just hope that this "fad" will stick, for the health of our planet and those that we love.
