I injured my knee a bit a week ago due to overuse I think. 8 hours solid of standing on it for a BBQ, followed by 30-45 mins running every other day and it had started to swell and give me pain.

I have given it a week's rest as I'm fully aware of the importance of not running through the pain and exacerbating an injury and yesterday went out feeling good to try a short 30 min run.

I was really motivated to do well and despite having a week off running, didn't feel my fitness had completely deserted me so I was feeling good for the first 15 mins. After that my knee started to feel a little warm and I could see that 30 mins was all I could manage, when BANG - my hip went! Agony in the left side of my pelvis and although I limped on (literally ) for another 3 minutes, 18 minutes yesterday was as much as I could manage.

I am SO frustrated I could scream!

ARRRGGGGHHHHHHHH! - There - if only that actually got rid of my frustration I suppose it would have been a good thing - but I'm still really upset about it. I'm on weeks 6 of my 8 week journey to 10k and have already had to re-do 3 weeks of the programme because of having a leg operation half way through. At this rate it feels like I am NEVER going to get to 10k. For the next few weeks this injury probably means I'm not going to be able to manage more than about 10 mins running at anyone time - if at all.

Maybe I should try to concentrate on improving my speed? Oh I don't know *&$*#**###~()(*^!!!!!!

OK, so I know I get anxious and I know I'm a worrier, but I was feeling REALLY weird yesterday about my planned run. I had to do 50 mins on my Bupa 10k plan and I was practically feeling sick when I thought about it! lol! (maybe all this watching triathlons at the Olympics wasn't a good idea! lol!)

50 minutes is further and longer than I hd EVER run before and being the wussy wimp that I am, I was feeling stupidly scared about it... :o(, my knees were feeling rather sore still from being on my feet all day on Sunday when we had guests for a BBQ and I was also worried about injury.

I posted for some helpful encouragement from the girls on Running for Fitness and Fun and to a woman, they were all convinced I could do it so out I went for what was probably one of the worst session I have ever had!

Really pleased with today's session even though I was really apprehensive about it and didn't really feel up to the task of doing 40-45 minutes.

I've only ever once run that long before and that was at the height of my fitness during my holiday and before my leg operation when I was forced to abstain from training for 3 weeks.

However, I concentrated on trying to go slowly enough to maintain my pulse rate at about 140 BPM and managed 45 mins (and 4.12 miles) without feeling in any actual pain and without feeling like I was about to collapse or fall over! lol! This is the way to improve my distance running and endurance I think. Slow and steady and it's the key for next week when I have to do 30, 40 and 50 mins respectively on each session.

I suppose its a bit of a shame that my pulse was significantly higher than the 125 of last time, but after 3 weeks off, it's only to be expected.

I ran for another 30 minutes yesterday, again at a really slow pace to help me complete the session more comfortably. It was quite nice to run without feeling I was under pressure to run at a certain speed. PB is all very nice but not something you want to aim for every session.

My next session will be tomorrow when I have to run for 40-45 minutes.

Partner and I still aren't speaking (not for 2 days now). Things are very strained since he refused to leave me alone on Monday.  I am looking forward to him not being around for 2 months from September. It can't come soon enough as far as I am concerned.

I have to say that there really is nothing quite like it! Going faster or further than you ever have before and feeling proud of yourself that you are making REAL measurable improvements!

I was following week 3 session 3 (again) today of the Bupa 10k training plan, which while it actually says to 3 miles, I wanted to see how I was doing regaining my fitness after my operation. Well, even though my heart rate was up to 151BPM avg for the whole time, I managed the 5k in 31:02 almost 40 seconds quicker than I have EVER done it before.

OK, so I REALLY did push myself as I might have done had I been in an actual race, but I felt like I needed something to make me feel good today and also wanted to feel that I haven't lost too much fitness while I had been forbidden to exercise after the op. I feel fab having done this and like I am almost a proper runner! lol! (you know like those club runners you sometimes see on the streets)
