First things first: I LOVE The Office. It has been my favorite TV show since it came on the air. Now that I've said that, I'll also tell you that I never post blogs . . . but I feel very strongly about this.
Although I normally save The Office on my Tivo until I buy the season's
DVD, this episode was the first I IMMEDIATELY DELETED once it was
over. Have we lost all of the precious subtleties here? The writers
seemed to have been too interested in creating cheap-thrill, empty drama (e.g., half of the
office gets caught eating cake in the warehouse, Ryan asks Kelly out
again to get rejected . . . yaaaawn). They switched scenes so quickly
that there was no chance for the usually clever and winding dialogue to
develop (e.g., cut to a boring office party with the characters eating
fruit . . . big deal . . . thier office parties are hardly ever fun
anyway). The writers for some reason used the character interview segments
merely to "tell" us the plot instead of ALSO creating entertaining dialogue (with
the exception of Kelly's diet devastation scene, hats off to her!).
Seriously, though, the most devastating part for me was how they
DESTROYED the characters we have all grown to know and love. It's as
though they said, "Let's emphasize the UNendearing aspects of each
character and see what the viewers think." Angela is now pissy for no
reason about everything and Dwight is now an outrageously bossy
asshole. Michael is stupid as usual, but there seems to be no room for
his usually well-intended motivations in the script. Instead, he
appears overly obnoxious. Way to go.
And by the way . . . what was that
thing growing on Michael's face? Oh, yeah, they FINALLY explained that
distraction near the end of the episode . . . too bad the punch line
wasn't worth the wait. Couldn't there have been a more entertaining way
to divulge Toby's condition at the end? Way to blow Jim's proposal to
Pam on the WORST episode The Office has ever put out. I was only half
watching by the time that came around.
I sincerely hope that the
writers figure out how to get back to the end of last season, which did
a great job of setting up and milking the awkward moments, as well as
developing the interesting aspects of the characters. I CANNOT
continue to love this show if it continues down this path of random,
extreme behavior and cheap humor. Until things get back to the good ol' days, I'll be re-watching the old episodes.
Does anyone else feel this way, or am I the ONLY one here?
