          Well, for some reason, that little girl's face keeps popping up in my head.  No, not the little girl I always dream about, but the other one I dreamt about a couple years or so ago.

           I still remember her face... it was the most peculiar dream I ever had.  I remember the dream started out where I was in a scientific facility where scientists were growing human fetuses in large containers filled with fluid that was a mixture of water and radiation.  And there was a man there in a business suit talking to one of the scientists doing tests on a giant UFO looking craft.  They were talking and they didn't know I was there with them.  I followed them as they were talking and walking into a lab room.  Behind a giant glass wall, there was an alien looking figure.  The man asked why the alien was there in the containment cell and the scientist said, 'Because he flew the spacecraft too close to the earth, so we isolated him as punishment.'

           Then I heard the alien creature say, 'But I only wanted to take a closer look at my kind... you said there were other humans outside this place and I just wanted to see what they looked like.'

           Then I heard the man say, 'We have to hurry up and try to find a way to fly this craft without the use of radiation.  It would be a great discovery for the world if we can finally say we built a craft that can fly in both the earth's atmosphere and in outer space without the inconvenience of the limitations that the shuttlecraft possesses.  However, we can't keep taking the risks of the people finding out about the human fetus experiment and we don't know how long we can keep this 'alien' theory going.  I know that we can keep throwing  them a bone in a way to keep their minds from coming close to the truth, but even the big boss doesn't want to take that risk any longer than he has to.  There's nothing more I want than to shut this experiment down and pretend it never happened.  To even think they began this experiment just to have test pilots is ridiculous but obviously they thought it was necessary since we couldn't afford to use real test pilots getting exposed to radiation; and plus it wouldn't look so good to the government if all of their pilots died left and right, from merely testing a new aircraft invention.  So get a move on it and stop letting beings who are undisciplined test fly the crafts.  We can't risk another Roswell... and it was a miracle the people didn't figure it out the first time, when the description of these so called 'aliens' were exposed. 

          Then I heard the scientist say, 'Well, so far we haven't discovered any other way to keep these new aircrafts going for long periods of time without radiation gas.  So far, we found that if we keep the aircraft diluged with radiation, they fly even better and last longer in space and can fly in and out of the earth's atmosphere without having to land for a very long period of time.  We're not sure if we can find anything else to fuel the crafts with those artificial intelligent abilities.. but we are trying to lesson the dosage of radiation to a lesser harmful level to where the real pilots can start flying them with contamination suits.'

           Just then, I turned to the 'alien' looking creature who I realized from what I've heard was just another human being but not fully developed and he was able to see me.  He said to me that the radiation kept him from forming a voice box and that he communicates through mind reading; and that the chemical also kept his skin from forming correctly and that's why he was all scaly.  Seeing his large eyes and his unformed lips, I told him he looked like a giant fetus.  As if I was looking at an ultra sound with a baby who was in the midst of their development, with big eyes and tiny mouth, but the lips hadn't formed yet.

            I blinked then found myself standing in a room with a normal looking little girl who was another part of the experiment.  She was telling me that they made her in the facility through a different experiment and she was able to breathe radiation and our oxygen without dying.  However, for her friends, the 'alien' looking beings, they can never survive in oxygen, they can only survive breathing in radiation gas filled air.

            She looked like she was seven but she said to me, 'I knew you would come for us... I knew you would come even before the day you were born.'  Then I had sensed this little girl was well over thirty years old and that she was growing very very slowly from whatever the scientists had done to her.  

           Then, a scientist showed up but she didn't see me, only the girl did and the scientist scolded her saying, 'Eventually, you will have to reveal whatever gifts or special abilities you have.. one way or another, we're going to find out just exactly how talented you are.'  She then injected a needle into the little girl saying, 'In case you tempt to escape, we've made it so that if you leave, you won't be able to survive in an oxygenated atmosphere after several hours.. that way, you'll be risking your own life to death if you do attempt to leave this facility.  The vents are now gonna fill this room with radiation so that as long as you remain here, you'll survive.'

           But the girl replied, 'I know if I reveal anything, you'll only copy what you need so that you can give these abilities to bad people.'

           After the scientist left, I asked her, 'If you have certain powers, why don't you use them to escape?'

           And she replied, 'Because they put something in my blood where they can detect changes and any actions I make, their computer will reveal to them the formula they need in order to manipulate anyone's DNA to be able to do whatever I do.  But so far, they don't know anything because I've kept myself from using any power I have.  I know everything these people do is for themselves and nothing they do is ever good.' 

          I forgot most of what was said after that but I do remember that I helped her escape the facility after going through so many obstacles with the government on my back and the people in my way... however, when the time came where I saw that she was close to dying, I asked her, 'What do I do now?  Do I take you back so that you can live or do I keep you out and let you die.'  She told me it was up to me and I had an idea to call the press and to have them gather quickly at a public place to expose the government of their secretive projects and to reveal the truth on what they didn't want the world to find out.  And just when she took the stand at the speaking post before all the press, I woke up.

Okay, so there are times when we need to hear your opinion and other times we don’t.  A few weeks ago, I was leaving a restaurant with a few girlfriends.  My friend, Megan, was walking a few steps behind me. Let me stop here and tell you that Megan is one of those girls you want to hate but just can’t because she is really not hateable at all.  She is a sweetheart.  But, you do want to hate her because she is really beautiful, thin, smart and has great style.  Okay, I digress. So Megan says to me, “Those pants are really cute but I can see your panty lines.  You need to start wearing thongs.”  This was not said in a mean way at all.  She was truly being helpful and she was right.  I have had almost twenty years since I was told that VPL (visible panty lines) were an awful site.  I was too afraid or disgusted by the idea of thongs back then.  However, I realized now that I should have followed this advice when I heard the VPL truth from my gay male college friend (whom of course I did not know at the time was gay – but that is another blog entry in itself). 

Back to present day, I appreciated the thong tip and decided Megan was right. However, later that day, I received a voicemail from Megan.  The voicemail was an apology for the comment.  Megan felt terrible that she criticized my choice of undergarments and was so worried she hurt my feelings.  I truly was not upset or hurt; I sincerely appreciated (and needed) the advice.  Sometimes it is very helpful and necessary to receive constructive criticism.

This situation got me thinking – well, since my mind never stops going, it did not “get me thinking” but just switched my mind gears into this situation.  The question is “when do we want or need truthful advice?”  How often have you seen a friend after an unfortunate visit to the hairdresser and wondered if you should tell the truth?  Probably not.   OR, Do you tell your friend who is so happy to finally fit into a way too tight size 6 pair of pants that she would really look better in the comfortable size 8 instead?  Definitely, if a camel toe is involved.  Or more seriously, would you tell your friend if you knew her spouse was cheating on her?  (Unfortunately, I have been personally faced with that one and it was not a friend but  a family member and a pretty horrible situation  - again, saving that one for many many future blog entries)

 In my opinion, the answer lies in the following simple statement.  If the friend who will be hearing the truth can simply remedy the situation, then GO FOR IT!  In other words, there is no reason to tell a friend that everyone thinks her husband is a jerk because all that is going to do is hurt her.  However, if that same husband has a piece of seaweed in his teeth, you can feel free to tell him. 

Lastly, remember to only give the advice when “the offender” can do something about it.  Once, years ago, and only once, my husband made the following mistake:  We were out on a Saturday night with friends.  He looked at my jeans and told me that they were not the best look for me – okay he was not that diplomatic but you get the point.  While I would have appreciated the advice prior to leaving the house, there was nothing I could do about it while waiting in line to buy movie tickets – except of course spend the rest of the night obsessing about how bad I looked in those jeans.  I calmly (okay, I admit, not so calmly) explained to him that next time, I would prefer to hear “the truth” when I could have CHANGED MY STUPID JEANS BEFORE WE LEFT THE HOUSE!  I think you get the point. 

As for me, I threw away those jeans immediately when I got home that night.  And of course, more recently I learned that after a few minutes, you forget you are wearing a thong!

We convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, then another. Then we are frustrated that the kids aren't old enough and we'll be more content when they are. After that, we're frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. We will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage. We tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her act together, when we get a nicer car, are able to go on a nice vacation, when we retire. The truth is, there's no better time to be happy than right now. If not now, when?

Your life will always be filled with challenges. It's best to admit this to yourself and decide to be happy anyway. One of my favorite quotes comes from Alfred D. Souza. He said, "For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin - real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, or a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life".

This perspective has helped me to see that there is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way. So, treasure every moment that you have and treasure it more because you shared it with someone special, special enough to spend your time...and remember that time waits for no one.

So... stop waiting until you finish school, until you go back to school, until you lose ten pounds, until you gain ten pounds, until you have kids, until your kids leave the house, until you start work, until you retire, until you get married, until you get divorced, until Friday night, until Sunday morning, until you get a new car or home, until your car or home is paid off, until spring, until summer, until fall, until winter, until you are off welfare, until the first or fifteenth, until your song comes on, until you've had a drink, until you've sobered up, until you die, or until you are born again to decide that there is no better time than right now to be happy.

Happiness is a journey, not a destination.
